Do I have to use a stain varnish over stain for my dining room table

  • If you want to restain your table, you need to strip the existing finish off first. I use Citristrip, then sand.

    You can just use varnish but you need to clean real good & lightly sand & clean then varnish.

    My father always used polyurethane as his top coats after he stained. The antiques he refinished to this day look like they were just refinished and it has been over thirty years!

    Agree with Nancy. Polyurethane is the way to go. Oil based is a bit more durable than waer based. Wipe on poly is easier to apply but will take more coats. Three coats regular poly and perhaps five coats wipe on.
