I know you won't like this, but as cheap as microwaves are these days, it probably would be cheaper to replace it or use it without the defrost button. You could maybe use 50% power or something to defrost. Perhaps the broken defrost button is just the beginning of the breakdown of the microwave. My first clue on my old one was the light that always wouldn't come on when you opened the door, then it gradually it took longer and longer to cook or reheat anything you put in it.
You're absolutely right! I didn't want to give in but it's only a 600 watt machine and quite limited to its cooking ability. Thanks!
I was going to make that the next step after pulling off the dial. It revealed 3 phillip screws but you're right, it ain't worth electrocution. I actually saw "retro" versions that were less than 1000 watts.
