I want to make a walkway using 1'x1'stepping stones

. Found many photos but the details never state the best spacing between stones. There must be a general rule for best spacing. I have had to put this project off foe several years. But I got a new left hip several months ago and I can now under take this project. I'll be 68 in October. I got to start mowing my yard again for the first time in 5 years. Some might hate yard work. But when the pain kept you from doing it being free of that pain and getting out in the yard to work is a blessing. Any help on stepping stone spacing will be helpful. Thanks. Anyone out there in need of a hip replacement GO FOR IT.

Congrats! This is for a path with grass in between: walk the path with a can of spray can. Walk normally and put a dot of spray paint at center of each step. That's where the center of your 1x1 goes. Put them down, then adjust as necessary as you walk back to the start; the walk will be very comfortable for you. If there's anyone else that will be walking the path, have them walk it before you finalize the construction -- just to keep everybody happy. Good luck!

Glad to hear you are doing so well now that you don't have the hip pain anymore! I made a seating area last summer in the front of the house and left no space between the stones. I put landscaping fabric under the pavers once I had the pavers all level and have had no weeds coming up yet. I did not go the way of putting down sand and gravel. Tight budget said pavers and fabric were the way we had to go. Seating area is used daily many times and is still level even after a winter none of them heaved up or anything. You don't have to worry about that, though. The space you leave between the stones is up to you, so do it the way you want it to look. You will be the one doing the work, make it look the way you know YOU will want it so that you will be proud to say you did it!

i don't know of any formula for spacing steping stones. I've always put mine about 6 inches apart. that's what works for me....if you can go bare foot... wet your feet and walk a yard or to. Measure the distance between the steps. Put your pavers down accordingl.y

Agree with Bijous that the best way to decide on the spacing is to walk back and forth many times first on the unset stones to determine what is the centerpoint of your natural gait.
There is no set rule as to how far apart the stones go. It is your path, so make it so that it is most comfortable for you.
