I've painted paneling in the past and it's an instant brighter. You could primer it and paint it any color you wish. I'd go with white myself. Use a floral drape or curtains and pick a color scheme from them. Example is light blue upper wall with lilac ceiling or pale green wall with blue ceiling...then throw pillows with patterns in similar colors and throw a pop of color in. Research how to mix patters, floral and stripe and pattern.

dont forget about a rug over your carpet. Adds more pattern and color to break up the monotone. Now it doesn't matter that the sofa is the same as your tables. Add metallic accents to add some shine.

One trick I like, is to find art work, a patterned tablecloth, curtain, rug, duvet, wallpaper etc. that you really like which has the brown shades in it. Use 2 other colours in it for your decor...

Another trick is to pick up or look at a decor or fashion magazine with brown somewehere on the cover. What colour is the font or background?

I love brown. It's such a good base color. I have a brown bedroom. The walls are a caramel color with white baseboards and door and door trim; the curtains are stark white covering the windows yet I've extended the rods to add rich brown velvet curtains on either side. The stark white allows the light to shine through with complete privacy. The bedspread is stark white, my furniture is brown and the rug is an antique with browns, blues, reds and golds. To me lighting is also key. Mine is on dimmers so it can be as bright or as low lighting as I want. Good luck!

Definitely paint your panelling, and all of your accessories should be on the light side. By that I mean natural wicker, jute, seagrass, etc. Beige or cream to offset all the heavy dark brown will do wonders to brighten your decor. Don't neglect ambient lighting, with adequate illumination even a dark room can feel warm and welcoming.

Always look to NATURE to answer any "what goes with" question! Leaves, their veins, stems, the trunk of the tree, ordifferent shades of a pinecone, or an acorn, or different shades of spots on leaves from the same tree! Same holds true for absolutely any color. greens, look at all the colors on the skin of a watermelon; reds, look at a pomegranite.
