    I've seen many tricks for this, but the one I use, is putting the shoe in the freezer and then breaking the gum off once it freezes.

    put shoe in plastic bag, seal, and place in freezer for one hour. Remove from freezer, take sharp knife and scrape gum from shoe. Make sure you have knife even with shoe as to remove all gum. If sticky area is left behind, vegetable oil on rag can be rubbed over it, to remove remaining gum. If area is a fall risk, use a little soap and water to remove oil.
