The wood needs to dry out slowly or it will crack, check, and split. To slow down the moisture evaporation process coat it with shellac. You can also use a mixture of beeswax and alcohol.

Best way is to leave the trunk or limbs intact and dry out on some 2x4s on the ground after taking one strip of bark off the whole length with a draw knife, then it will check at the bare portion. Turn the logs every so often. Then when dried, saw into rounds.
