Another art piece using the many shells I got for free from Craigslist! The key here is to keep your eye open for things you can repurpose...in this case, I used a long planter that originaly housed succulents. It was great for some of the bigger shells and now my husband has claimed this piece for his office. (UPDATE: since my husband didn't take it to work right away, I snagged it for myself!)
E voila! The finished project!
The "Undersea Garden" now sits in my office where I get to enjoy it every single day. :-) Read below how I made it -- and keep your eye out on those "odd" and "unusual" containers -- I've been holding on to this one for about 2 years before I finally repurposed it here!
Repurposed planter
I started with a long planter I already had - it originally had succulents planted in it. I thought it would be perfect for some of the bigger shells and coral pieces I wanted to use.
Some of the pieces I pulled as potentials.
Here's some of the shells I picked through to try to find the most interesting ones - varying shapes, sizes, and colors to add visual interest.
Just let your eye guide you!
Just eyeball the shell where you think you want it, fidget with it to see how it fits, then glue it down. I like to start with big pieces, then fill in with smaller shells and some coral "leaves." Once the piece looks finished, take a step back and if you want to really pack shells in there, look for any gaps you may have missed--look at the piece from different angles and fill in with smaller shells if you like!
Suggested materials:
  • Glue sticks and glue gun
  • Seashell assortment
