How to get a hard clear covering off a kitchen table top?

I have a dinning room table that is solid maple made in 1952 as stamped on the underside. They put some kind of clear coat on the top to protect it ( obviously from meLOL) It feels like it's actually a sheet of some unknown substance, although there is no definite edge to it. Can someone tell me how to remove this coating ?
