go with age appropriate style, or something that you can change in a simple way so you don't have to replace it later, unless you just wanted to. I've seen headboards made from doors, window panes with or without glass with photo backgrounds of all types of subject matter, wood pieces cut, stained and stacked or set in a chevron pattern, use wood pallets, paint stained plain and simple, turned shelving length wise, ladders lengthwise used as shelves, Hang a cool tapestry or blanket as backdrop / headboard. You have a lot of choices. Talk with your son, and get him involved in the process or deciding and making the headboard.
I have seen some amazing headboards made from Pallets - actually I have seen entire beds made from Pallets, and it includes a lot of storage underneath too. Check out Pallets101.com for ideas, blueprints etc.
I made one for my visiting grandson's attic bed. In a way my answer isn't fair (I found all the elements for free) but in a way it is fair, because it shows how easily you can assemble things. The cut MDF I found at our town swap shop and also the fabric came from there. The other things I had (batting, muslin etc; I had) also this is against a bead board wall so we just fastened it from the other side.
