Garden question-how short can I cut my hydrangea bushes, and when?

Now they are starting to fade and the colors are changing to a beige tinge. I know I should wait until the flowers are dead, right?

    I DO NOT cut my hydrangea bushes. In the Spring, after the new growth starts, merely pull the dead bits off. Eazy, peazy! With this method, my bushes thrive!

    If you need to make them shorter cut one third off.

      I have many different answers from friends so now I'm more confused!! If I cut them down to about 1.5 feet is that OK or too short?
