Well, I'm not an expert, but I know the hostas by my back deck are treats for critters and birds, not any insects that I've seen. I have bunnies, chipmunks, a scraggly mouse, and all kinds of birds...the big bird feeder is above part of the row of hostas and the birds (and squirrels!) spray the seeds and they end up on the hosta leaves, waiting to be pecked, nibbled, or otherwise eaten. My front yard hostas have no problem, they are away from that bird feeder.
That's my situation, but have you actually looked under your hosta leaves to see if you have snails, or bugs that are munching on your plants? There are pesticides you can buy, you can sit and pick 'em off, or use some homemade soaps that won't hurt the plant.
Also, make sure the leaves aren't getting sunburned. It sounds funny, but hostas are meant for shade, and in hot sun with water droplets on the leaves it can actually burn a hole right through.
I recommend using shredded Irish Spring bar soap. Spread it around your plants. You can shred the bars of soap on a box grater or even in a food processor. Animals and insects hate the smell and taste of the soap and, here's the best part, it will not harm your plants at all.
