I was actually commissioned to do a table (I had the table from a curb side) for a friend. Her instructions were that she wanted it dark with her birth symbol and minimal pops of color, other than that I was allowed to use my imagination. So I decided to carve her birth symbol, pour charcoal fluid on it and burn it all over the top. I used spray enamel and painted the entire bottom, legs and underside. I used glow in the dark powder with glaze coat to fill the carved areas and without the glow powder on the entire top.
Before photo of desperate table.
I used a dremel tool to carve the the Aquarius symbol then I took it outside and made sure I had a dripping wet beach towel rag in case I needed to put out any fires. I drizzled the charcoal fluid onto the table and lit it and let it burn out several times. This process was really fun!
This is the burn process completed.
I flipped the table over on its top and use the black spray enamel and sprayed the entire bottom side and legs of the tableI carved a few lightning bolts in the top because it just needed something extra, I also painted sections of the legs purple which is the color of the birthstone for Aquarius for her minimal pop of color.
Because this is a drop leaf table I had to place doubled over pieces of aluminum foil the length of the table between the drop leafs and the main table to prevent the glaze from running through and to prevent sealing the drops sections . I mixed the glaze according to the directions and added my glow powder. I filled the carved areas with the glow glaze. then I mixed more of the glaze without the glow powder and covered the entire surface of the table continuously brushing the drips from the edges (PS...Make sure to cover the floor with news papers or drop cloth). Use a heat gun or hair dryer to remove air bubbles.
With the sides down.
Glow in the dark action. I wish the pic's did it justice because it looks really cool in the dark but the pic's stinks.
Oh I forgot, I carved a few lightning bolts in the top because it just needed something extra, I also painted sections of the legs purple which is the color of the birthstone for Aquarius for her minimal pop of color.
