I have built many kinds of furniture, and refinished some. The right sander depends on what you are sanding. Some parts are round, or have tight details, some flat and easier to sand. Some places it's easier to just hand sand. I have different kinds of sanders myself. For instance my favorite is random orbital. It leaves few scratch marks. But I also have a belt sander, detail sander, drum sanders, etc. I found an important thing to remember is to gradually use finer and finer grit sandpaper. I usually work mine down to 220 grit.
