Back splash on vinyl

I wish to put up a new back splash on a previous on but it is from the 1970s and it is from the counter top material. Can I just put something on it or do I need to rip it off first? thanks
Linda

If the laminate is stable, solid, stuck on real good, and not peeling you can tile over it with no problem. Use tile mastic adhesive and not thinset. Thinset is cement based and won't adhere properly to the laminate.

You can buy paint that will cover tiled splashes. If you want to put something on top, you will need to rough up the tile a bit so that whatever you use adheres to the old surface.
