Do petunias repopulate themselves?

I have 3 petunia plants that have come up in the middle of August around my front steps. I did not plant them there so was wondering how they got there. They are very pretty but so late in the season to enjoy them for any length of time. I do have a few petunia plants not far from where they are, thus the question of repopulation.

The seeds may have been carried in on the wind or by birds.. they may not come up again in the spring

    Probably dropped by the birds.........

Seeds will move about. They may not be duplicates of the "mother plant". AS they are hybrids. But if you are lucky - you may get some more "volunteer" plants next year.

As long as the plants get to flower and seed they will probably come up again. My Mom one year had petunias and other plants in with a geranium plant and they blew seeds in front of her patio and they are still coming back up every year. Most likely they blew in from someone else's plants, or a bird or critter dropped them by your front steps.

I think you are right. I knew a guy that would break some off & stick them in the dirt & they would grow! He either had a green thumb or I just never knew you could do that.

They are annuals so are you sure they are petunias?

    • Teresa Teresa on Oct 02, 2017

Yes. That is why I wasn't sure about the repopulation. The only way a bird could put them there would be a seed. Where would they get seeds so late in the season also? I suppose it could happen. But 3 plants? One is pink & 2 are purple.

Some petunias do reseed depending on the variety and growing conditions.
