I assume you are talking about elephant ear Hostas. If so, cut them back to ground level in the fall. Leave root system intact and in the ground. Put mulch over area for the winter. In the spring you will see little sprigs coming up. (That is the perfect time to split them).

Yes unless you live in a tropical zone. They don't deal well with freezing temperatures. Some people just replant them each year with new bulbs.

Elephant ears are considered a tropical plant and they will die if the bulb freezes or stays cold for too long a time, just like other tropical plants. Please if you want them for next year, dig them up and store them for the winter. Let the first frost kill off the fronds, did them up, let them dry and cut off the fronds before you store them. Make sure the ground is warm enough in the spring before you replant them. Good luck.

I'd give my eye teeth to have my elephant ears freeze and be gone. I've tried everything to get rid of them. I've dug them up -- there's always a runner I missed, I sprayed brush kill on them for 3 days straight and the only thing that did was make them spread even further. So, if yours die, I'll be glad to send you some bulbs.
