Without seeing it, it's hard to say if it will be too dark. How about considering a white & navy backsplash, in a nice design, like white subway tiles or glass tiles with a navy accent stripe?

You can also look into LED strip lighting under the upper cabinets, to illuminate the countertop area.

I don't think it will be too dark since you have white walls and countertops. Sounds very pretty.

You could put in windows in front of the block windows with lights between them

If you like the navy backsplash, go ahead and use it. You might consider a string of LED lights under the cabinets to give you more light. With enough light, you could go dark.

We have can lights in our basement. We also use lamps.

If you really like the look of navy backsplash, go for the navy. However, remember that you will then have white/navy/white/navy which will chop up the overall look of the kitchen, and make it seem smaller, and possibly disjointed.

If you want the kitchen to look bigger and brighter than it is, then go for a white backsplash. To tie into the navy lower cabinet color have some fun using navy in the accent areas such as knobs for the upper cabinets, navy clock on the wall, navy placements and so on.

I totally agree with Flipturn7. Better to have a cohesive look. Let the navy cabinets anchor the area, and be a more stand alone statement. Bring in more navy with other kitchen items. and throw in a nice contrasting color (or colors) to keep the room from looking like a 'naval command center'. : )

as far as adding under cabinet lighting is good, if you have space you can also run rope lighting along the top of the upper cabinets if they are a drop down style.

I'd use under counter lighting. You can never have enough light in a kitchen no matter what the color. It you don't have overhead lighting, use lighting on top of the wall cabinets also. You can even put those on a dimmer.

Under cabinet lights are a nice touch and led's last a long time with no replacement 'bulbs' needed. Some just stick on and do not require being plugged in.
