Are you looking for a floral garden or a herb or vegetable garden?

do an assessment of your yard. what area gets 6-8 hr of sun? where is it always shady? are there mature trees in the yard and do the pines or walnut trees- secret a substance that that will kill other trees? (it can kill other plants as well.) next get your soil tested. some plants love soil on the acid side, some don't. you can add amendments to adjust ph. a water source nearby is beneficial, mama nature doesn't always provide. look around your neighbor hood- what type of gardens do you see all flower, all veggie a bit of both? is bending and stooping hard to do? a raised garden bed at a comfortable sitting ht is a blessing.

Small? How about a raised bed garden where you use bricks or rocks or wood to build an outline of your garden then fill it with potting soil and plant your garden using some sturdy perennials like Hosta or Lavender or Heather. Then add in some nice annuals to add color and interest, like Impatiens, Daisies, Geraniums or Petunias. Add a pretty focal piece like a bird bath or a
a concrete frog, or even a small fountain. Viola!
