I have been watering them maybe once a week or every other week. We are in a drought but it is suppose to rain some each day this week but I am not doing to hold my breath. Notice those black spots on tree leaves too, planted in 1955 (trees)
it sounds like improper watering ,rough will also cause fungus.If you do not water on a consistent basis that is what happens.those that wait for rain will succumb to fungus.water when it is appropriate timing
