How and when to prune a mature rose bush

Hi. I have a very old rose bush which my beloved mum grew many years ago. I want to transfer it into a pot and it desperately needs pruning because the thicker branches look as if they are dying. Please help!!!

Since this is such a special rose, I'd have a professional transplant it into a pot. The roots will need to handled correctly and they are probably quite deep. Make sure you take a viable cutting or two in case the mother rose dies after transplanting. Good luck.
