Take the piece with you to a hobby store and see if you can match the material you used, or perhaps something really close in color.

I might try yarn, leather, ribbon. Take to the hobby and craft store with you and try different things till you find what suits your taste.

It is jute - at least that's what we used in the 70's. Not sure what to do about the shedding, sometimes a good spritz of hairspray works... Nice job on it, by the way!

In middle school (70's) we made a lot of macrame hanging and plant hangers. We always got rid of the shedding with a lighter, just lightly singe the surface than it will be smooth. You then can seal it with spray like scotch guard.

Look online for macrame cord. A lot of online sites still sell it. Google online craft suppliers of macrame cord & take it from there. I also agree with the person who told you to use a clear spray sealer. Give it a few coats depending on how badly it's fraying (ut looks really good to me). Naturally do it outside & let it dry completely between coats. Good luck.
