Hi Norma. I am not sure which kind you are using but some need to be watered in right away. The only one that doesn't is weed and feed. The weed and feed needs to be applied to damp grass so it sticks to the weeds, but shouldn't be watered in for a few days so it can kill the weeds. I apply my fertilizer, but the weed and feed, right before it is going to rain. Otherwise it will burn the grass out. Also check and make sure that you have you spreader set to the recommended setting per the instructions on the bag. I hope this helps.

Fertilizer should be applied on a cool morning or evening and depending on which one the bag will tell you when or if it should be watered in.

Always follow directions on package. What kind of fertilizer? liquid or granules? how are you putting it on, sprayer or spreader?

make sure to follow the package directions. Do not put a thick layer, just sprinkle.

Make sure you are following directions and also looking at what temperature outside is too high to apply we also try and water in after application also we try and watch to work with forecast of rain if permissable. My husband is a firm believer in Scott's 4 step system

Most lawn fertilizers come with a chart on the back that tells you what setting to use with various spreaders. If you are using an old spreader it might be time for a new one. Follow the directions. With fertilizer more is not better. And more frequently is also not better. Apply according to the directions and you will get the best results. You can also contact your state University extension service. Google your University name such as University of Wisconsin and add extension service. The site will pop up. Give them a call or and email. They are there for the very purpose of helping folks with gardening and yard questions so don't be shy to ask. They will probably suggest you have your soil tested (you will send in samples to them) so they can give you recommendations on what fertilizers to use.
