In northern Wisconsin be cut the Annabelle hydrangeas back either in the late fall or early spring. Cut them back to a few inches from the ground for stronger stems that will stand up better. With woody hydrangea shrubs like Limelight I like to leave the blossom heads for interest through the winter then cut them off in the spring.

Wait until the first couple of frosts hit then you can safely cut them back. You don't want them to try to bloom again too soon.
