Oh boy, I can't imagine a flowering plant that wouldn't grow well in Northern California. I remember seeing roses there that were the size of dinner plates, no lie! If you need inspiration and ideas, visit some botanical gardens in your area. Or even a couple a trips to nurseries (as opposed to the garden section of Walmart or Home Depot) to just wander around and look at the plants. Bring a camera and take pictures of plants and of their tags so you know what they are. Walk around your neighborhood to see what other people are growing successfully and what you like and don't like. Look for garden clubs in your area and go to a few meetings which are usually open to the public or contact local master gardeners http://mg.ucanr.edu/ Good luck and have fun.
