Go through your leftover paints (I have about 10 buckets in the basement), and choose your colors. You can daub it on with brushes or sponges or you can get fancy and use stencils. You will get lots of ideas once you start. There are gobs of videos on YouTube! Have fun with it!
Broken tiles or plates around the top and towards the bottom. Use the same adhesive they use for tile then grout or don’t...keeping in mind that the non grout gathers more spider webs and dirt.
One of the problems with painting clay pots... is that the UNSEALED clay absorbs water from the dirt in the pot and this causes the pot to expand and contract as it gains and loses this moisture. This causes the paint to "detach" from the surface of the pot and flake away (been there, done that). There are commercial CLAY POT SEALERS available to help prevent this problem. I have also used "pruning spray" on the inside of the pot, for waterproofing.
** If you are using the pot for a FOOD plant.. check to make sure sealers and paints are SAFE for edible plants** some are not.
Why go to all that work just to have it flake off... take the time to seal the pot, before painting.. then use a good primer and paint with a good outdoor paint. Seal over the top with a good outdoor clear and your project will last lots longer.
Hello Mooreboardandcare :) There are SO many ideas floating around about how to decorate clay pots; everything from plain paint with two different colors on the pot, to fanciful designs that can be painted on, to decoupage, and fabric wrapping, making pot insects, animals, and people ... it can truly be mind-boggling as what to do and where to start, but we're going to give it a try right here and now ;) LOL
