How to clean hardwood floors

We recently put Somerset brand prefinished 3/4" solid hardwood floors all over our main living area including the kitchen. I need to know what the topcoat is and how to clean it, esp. in the kitchen. Somerset doesn't answer my e-mails and the sales person doesn't know. Also, is it possible to add another layer of topcoat to the kitchen while the floor is new and unblemished?

    Ultimate, Aluminum oxide urethane finsh

  • Wow! Not good! I would just give their customer service number a call. Generally you do not another topcoat, at least not without a lot of extra work. Why do you think you need it? I use Bona products for hardwood.

    • Gotcha, what is your warranty? Check on that before you do anything so as to not void it with any after market work. I would call the customer service telephone number. Keep us posted! Good luck!

Yes, you did try to contact the people I would have suggested that you contact. Unlikely anyone here will have direct knowledge of the specific product that you have. Don't you wish that you had gone with a brand that cares about their customers?

My best advice is this: Factory finishes are much harder and more durable than anything you can install. There is something called "alumina" in the finish that most use and this stuff is baked on. Putting another wear coat on is not advisable or needed.

Check with the flooring department in your nearest Home Depot or Lowe's for what they recommend to clean and protect high quality prefinished hardwood flooring. Most have at least one very knowledgeable person. Chances are it will be made by a company called "Bruce". They know hardwood flooring. A pox on your sales person. Any flooring company needs to have sales people who know something about the products they sell and how to service the customer after the sale.

Silly me, Retta. I just looked up Somerset Floors and if you know what product you had installed it will tell you what kind of finish you have. I see that their "Color Plank" line of solid hardwood has a 50 year finish guarantee. You cannot get much better than that. Congrats on a good choice and save your receipts. Let us know how it looks in 50 years.

Thanks for you advice, Ken--and your sense of humor. I grew up with the notion that wood and water just don't go together, so it was hard to put that wood in the kitchen. I looked on the website when the floor was brand new, but couldnt find the info I wanted. I'll try again.

I use Holloway House floor finish. I',ve been doing it for over 10 years, now and it is just starting to show signs of wear.

Hello Retta, hope this helps you out, begin by dusting or sweeping your floors well. Then make a cleaning mixture using 4 cups warm water and a few drops of castile soap or dish soap. Do not shake, but gently mix this, then mop or scrub small sections at a time, drying them with a clean cloth or dry mop after
