You can take potted herbs indoors to continue growing over the winter, but be prepared to give them enough light to survive. My south facing windows didn't give direct sunlight due to the overhang and most did poorly or died except my rosemary that turned into a bush. They will also possibly need a little more moisture due to less humidity in the house.
Make sure they don't back up directly to a cold window and invest in an inexpensive greenery lamp. Otherwise, they usually don't live.
See if this helps. Also consider getting a grow light too.

All my plants survived last winter. Maybe because most of them were in a room which has no direct source of heat. They faced east and I kept extra light on them and turned them. I have basil, parsley, rosemary, lavender, oregano and some other flowering plants.

Great idea and great fun as well. Something nice and green in the house in the winter is always great. Use miracle Gro soil to pot and set them in a bright window. Remember to keep the tips pinched out so the plant bushes and doesn't get leggy.
