Judy....I am a retired designer and worked with a lot of contractors that had to clean cabinets before a remodel. Their term is to "degrease" them....which is basically using something like 409 to cut through the grim from stick hands and steam/cooking buildup. If they are painted, you might have to do the entire door gently and comeback to touch places around handles etc. If they are painted over a stained cabinet, use extra care and try a spot that is not visible. Sometimes painting over stain, does not adhere as well and you might strip off the paint along with any area you're cleaning.

Stained cabinets work the same way......with the caution of not wearing off any top coat that sealed the stain. They used 409 as well. If you want to bring a sheen or luster back to your cabinets, contact a specialized paint store to see what they suggest to seal your clean cabinets and give them a fresh new glow.

I've heard of too many suggestions without knowing the outcome. And as always.....get a sample if possible, and/or test it out on the inside or hidden area of your cabinet. It's a lot of work, but when you're done, you'll be very happy with the result. Good luck!
