Jute Wrapped Mason Jar Lights

Turn a mason jar into nifty camping/glamping accessory with just a few inexpensive supplies. Easy to make and very pretty.

First, assemble your materials. These include a mason jar, jute webbing, velcro squares, battery powered micro lights, jute or raffia string, and a glue gun. (I got all my supplies at Walmart.) Next cut a strip of jute webbing that’s long enough to wrap around the jar with an inch or two to spare and using the glue gun attach it to the jar.
When you have it secured all the way around the jar, you will notice some gaps around the top. This is where I used the raffia to cinch the top of the webbing close to the jar. Just cut a strip of raffia long enough to fit around the top of the jar and weave it in and out of the webbing, pull it tight and tie it off.
Stick one piece of the velcro to the bottom of the jar and the corresponding piece to the battery box.
Unwrap the lights (they're wrapped around a piece of cardboard inside the box) insert the batteries, and stuff the lights into the jar. The metal wire the lights are on makes it really easy to get them inside.
Now you’re ready to make the hanger for the light. Drill a hole in the middle of the mason jar lid, poke the two ends of a precut piece of jute string thru the hole (the length of the string will vary according to how long you want the hanger to be), and tie a knot big enough to keep the string from pulling out.
Screw the lid on the jar and stick the battery box to the bottom of the jar.
Your finished lantern is ready to display! If you want to make it a little fancier, tie a ribbon bow around the neck of the jar. You can even vary the ribbons by holiday – orange for Halloween, red for Christmas, green for St. Patrick’s Day, etc. I used a piece of green trim that I had leftover from another project. I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who are more creative than me and can think of even more ways to dress it up. I’d love to see your comments and ideas.
