SK's Poor Old Table

SK on Elderberry
by SK on Elderberry
I was given this table by my trusty garage sale shopper. Solid oak and tile trestle table. This poor thing sat in my storage for quite some time. I just wanted to make sure I had the right finish for it. I decided to glaze and crackle paint the top and iron paint the legs.
What a project. It got way more messy as I discovered that under the tile top was moisture and mold. So the tiles had to go. I replaced them with a smooth piece of plywood.
I sanded and filled. Over . And over. Time. Just time SK. I coated the prepared top with a crackle medium and then painted it a vermilion red. Let this crack and dry and then painted over the top with an old cream. This cracked too. I glazed the entire thing with a dark chocolate glaze. I added a chessboard to the center and a few graphics around the edges. When all this was cured, I waxed it three times, buffing to a nice sheen.
This little table is going up at auction for a local youth group.

SK Sartell and an old Oak Tiled Table Adventure
The old Oak Tiled Table had a inset tile top.
Priming and filling. Over and over and over. You get the picture?
I Was finally at the point of being able to create. No Wait. A tile is loose. I lifted the dang thing and discovered mold and moisture under every tile.
The tile all must come up. Gag. What a mess.
Cleaning the sub-surface of glue and gunk.
I painted the trestle legs with iron metal effects paint from Modern Masters.
I used a glue gun to add vines and leaves. and then painted it iron and rust again. I waxed these legs several times for durability.
I coated the new prepped top with crackle medium then painted it with a vermilion paint that I had on hand. Wow. Cool to watch it crack.
I painted over the vermilion with an old white and watched it as it crackled.
I glazed the entire top with a dark chocolate glaze. I added a painted chess board in the center.
I added graphics around the edges and sanded the entire thing back and then waxed and buffed three times. Ta Da!
