Preparation is the key. The soil needs to be dug up and as many of the weeds with their roots need to be dug out. Some people then use a weed barrier. If you plant thickly and use a lot of mulch, you will have fewer weeds in your garden.

Daylilies are good for sunnier areas. Hostas are great for shadier areas. The truth is that you will still have weeds, but daylilies and hostas, once established, tend to elbow out weeds and when you do get weeds they stand out.

Use mulch around whatever you plant to discourage weeds.
