Look in magazines, gardening and landscape books, online, Pinterest, Hometalk, etc for tons of ideas. Save designs that appeal to you, and gradually you will get a picture of how you want your yard to look.

  • Hire a landscape architect! Contact a local college, sometimes they need projects - they could help you with your house. Many of the better nurseries and garden centers have resident Master Gardeners and landscape architects to help you. They chage a flat rate or a "project rate" and some are hourly. My favorite is B B Barns in Asheville Arden, NC - look for something like this . . .

First, figure out what you want in a yard.

    • Do you want a nice garden, but you don't want to do much work to maintain it?
    • Do you want an outdoor breakfast nook?
    • Do you want to entertain out there?
    • Do you want a place for the kids and the dog to cavort?
    • Do you want a place to escape from the world with loads of privacy?

Yes, Pinterest has tons of ideas, but you have to decide how you want to use the space or you might collect hundreds of ideas and still have no clue what you want. Plus you have to look at the budget. Plants take a while to pay you back. Decks can be costly. A fence is nice, but is it really what you want?
