Best and first thing is to find the source and eliminate it, so they don't multiply. Check under sink, in garbage, in drains, schoolbags, pockets, purses, lunchbags...you may find a "missed" fruit.

Any fruits or veggies that must remain on the counter, should we washed with soapy water, vinegar, lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide to kill any larvae.

Here are suggestions to get rid of the ones that are already in the house.

Take a small bowl or cup and pour about an inch of apple cider vinegar. Cover it with plastic wrap. Cut a small slit in it about 3/4 of an inch. The gnats go in but don't come out. Just leave it on the counter top. They will do the rest.

Fruit flies are small bowl of apple cider, squirt some dish washing soap. Not too much soap, swirl it around. Try to put your days trash in a plastic bag. Emty it daily. It works.

If you are really infested with fruit flies or gnats, put up a fly strip where they hang around the most. Pour boiling water down all drains where you see them. They like the ever ready moisture in the traps. Check all houseplants to make sure they aren't coming from there. If they are, you will need to repot with fresh soil, clean out the pot really well and gently rinse off both the plant and any soil left on the roots with tepid water to rinse any bugs off and larvae or eggs. Hop you get rid of them soon! Good luck.
