One of my clients had tons of baseball caps he wore, not collectibles, so I just got those inexpensive expandable wooden accordian racks.... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001E77JNY/ref=asc_df_B001E77JNY5203837/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=395033&creativeASIN=B001E77JNY&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198090973912&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13970299381839517399&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033057&hvtargid=pla-320291795033 if he has caps that fall off, I've used wooden clothes pins to hold them on.
Hanging shoe racks orshelves...a friend attached hooks to a wall in her garage and hang her husband's hats from it
Take a trip to the Dollar Store, buy a wooden expandable mug rack. Depending on the number of hats buy 2 or 3. I paint them the colour I want or leave natural wood. You can hang near the ceiling so they are up out of the way and create a border of them on a small wall. Cheap, easy and looks good as evenly spaced.
