First call is to a proper licensed chimneysweep. Depending upon his inspection and cleaning, her or she will let you know if you need a contractor to rebuild and have inspected to bring up to current code. Make sure you have a spark arrestor chimney cap too.

My husband and I bought a (1926) house with a wood burning fireplace we were told worked fine. I had it professionally inspected before ever using it. (I did get a second opinion too) The chimney needed a new liner, a new chimney cap and a new fire box.! It was a fire hazard. We had all the work done but it was pricey but now it's safe!
Value and Home Depot will install the door if purchased in their stores for I believe it’s $49 to $99 and it’s worth it, they take the old one off and if your current one is not decaying or rotted then no need for a replacement there. Right now they are marked down due to end of the season.
I had my 1940s fireplace taken down this last year after chopping wood for 60 years enough was enough. Now I had this inspected by a licensed chimney person when I moved in 15 years ago and had the damper repaired, new chimney cap, and new pipes laid in to the chimney flue. With the air tight it was so hot, I think I used it 6 times in 15 years. When they took it down and pulled out the cast iron fire box, it looked like swiss cheese with all the holes..... darn glad I wasn't burning it, it could have burnt the whole house down.
