Yes, but you have to use high heat resistant paint.
sand to take down the high gloss, clean off all dust. Then use heat resistant paint as Trudy said

Yes, you can. I would use high heat spray paint. Try to mask off the black part on just one area, and spray the brass. Check to see if the newly spray black matte matches the black on the rest of the screen. If it does't, you could just spray the entire screen lightly. I did the same without doing anything to the brass to prepare, but you could clean with TSP or lightly rough up with fine sandpaper or even steel wool.
I just repainted mine black. I couldn't use spray paint in the house so I bought a small can of brush-on Rustoelum Engine paint. It is used to paint car engines and is good to 500°. Good luck!
