How do you get rid of Voles and rodents which eat bulbs?

I plant mothballs with my bulbs! Daffodils are poisonous and no one eats them! If you live out in the country, get a cat!

Wire mesh. Build a mesh box sink it in the dirt plant your bulbs, put wire mesh on top. Just keep the mesh on top open enough for the plants to poke thru. This method does restrict your landscaping if you go for a naturalized planting scheme.

I put my plants in several layers of chicken wire then mole poison and later I pour on a mixture of 1 gal of water, an ounce or two of Dawn dish washing low and a bottle of castor oil

we used moth balls in the ground and on top which made a difference in the garden and flower beds.

mothballs are highly recommended by a LOT of Hometalkers!

We have friends who dug the holes to plant bulbs then used galvanized mesh to line the hole, filled it with dirt added the bulbs, voila! the tunneling rodents will come up against a barrier in their hunt for edible roots and tubers.

I use mouse traps. I got 10 of the Victor with the very large yellow pan, that is impregnated with bait. I placed them right at the holes, and so far in the last three months I have caught a total of 163. When none are caught in a trap for a week I move it. I use little flags on wire to spot the location. NOTE, All the other ideas involve just protecting the bulbs, and NOT affecting the population. While that may work for the bulbs, doesn't do much for the rest of the grass, OR your neighbors. I am always amazed at how so many ideas just put the problem on the neighbors that have to put up with them, when you just drive them away. With moth balls or anything else. Shame on you.
