How do I make a rack to display clothes for a garage sale?

Do you have a space where you can hang a clothesline? If so, use clothes pins to hang the clothing.

In our old house, we did a quick, heavy duty clothes rack to hold snowmobile suits, ski clothes, etc., in our basement where no closets existed. We used two 2x4s, 6 ft in length, crossed them to make a "X" at approximately 5 ft, nailed them at this spot. (Do this to make a total of two X's, one for each side.) Once they were placed upright, we placed a long piece of pipe (I think it was 1/2 inch in diameter x 6-8 feet long, and rested it between the upper parts of the pair of wooden X's. (Note, the X's were not equal on top and bottom, the top of the X was smaller to provide the height from which to hang the clothes. Once you are happy with the height, place multiple nails to stabilize each X, making sure to make both X's equal.)

A lot depends on how heavy the clothes are. If you have a couple of trees close enough together, get some rope and loop it loop it twice, three times for heavier clothes. If you are actually doing this in your garage, tie ropes from the rafters and suspend a closet pole or PVC pipe. You can do the same outside if you have a strong enough tree limb. If you don't, you can easily make a stand with PVC pipe and elbows, just don't glue them together. That way you can take it apart.

Hi Deborah, I consider myself an expert at yard sales and although I have not sold clothes per se, I can give some general advice. Price everything and do not use stickers on fabric, but string tags. When my daughter did display for Neiman Marcus, stacked things like shirts, were alternated, neck at top, and next shirt, neck at bottom. Make things very neat looking, have top buttons buttoned and on folded sweaters have maybe every other button, buttoned. Have hanging things as neatly displayed as you would do in your own closet. Dresses together, skirts, slacks etc. Make whatever structure you use for hanging things look sturdy, not flimsy. If it is in a garage have plenty of light, esp in corners! For your sale, pretend this is a commercial space and think of how stores do things. Also think seasonally. . . not for the items but for the setting. A sale I had for another person, I recommended that she get a big bowl of apples because this was in a large garage and the odor of the apples was very pleasing as people entered. Sales are a lot of work no matter how you do them, but spiffing things up really increases your sales! Good luck!
