You must use good potting soil. Put gravel in first to help with drainage. Make sure you have enough soil on top of the gravel to promote healthy root growth for the size of the mature plants. Use a good fertilizer as directed because the planter will take the same care as potted plants and watering depletes the soil faster than when planted in the ground. Same goes for watering. Since you are using painted tires you could have some heat buildup from the black rubber, especially in the heat of the day, so watch the moisture level carefully so they don't overheat the roots.
