How to keep raccoons out of my yard

A large group of raccoons takes over my yard at night digging up plants. When we are on vacation they seem to know we are gone and come into our house thru the cat door. The pet sitter locks the cat door in the evening but they frequently get in before the door is locked.
We put up extremely bright lights that go on at night over the cat door but that doesn't work. The electronic cat collars that only allow those in and out would work but my cats lose them.
Any suggestions?

I wish I could but when we vacation for weeks to a month my cats need to go in and out during the day. My pet sitter cannot always get here before dusk and then they come in. I cannot keep mt cats locked inside for that long of a time.

Our friends have a pet door in the back of their home so they put a lock on the pet door for night and for when they are not home. Animals cannot go through the door when they lock it down. Something as easy as a heavy block or two propped against the pet door might do the same thing to stop animals from entering, especially small animals like a raccoon.

hi - the pet door locks and we have it closed at night but the pet sitter cannot always get here before dusk and the raccoons come in. I also need to know what to do about them tearing up my yard eating plants and bulbs and this year they are so hungry they are eating the lemon peels off the tree. They ate all the fruit off our trees before we got anything.

the city said we are not allowed to trap and relocate them.
