Is it possible to paint a fabric lamp shade with fabric paint?

The shade is a light ecru which I want to paint white. It is smooth.

Yes... since you don't normally wash a lamp shade, you would not necessarily need fabric paint.. several very light coats with spray paint (on the OUTSIDE only as some are flammable) should turn out well... LED bulbs would reduce heat issues
Of course. Get it as clean as you can first. But remember, even white paint will limit the amount of light that goes through the shade.
Would it be easier to make a sheer white fabric sleeve (even a gathered one) to pull over it - it would tone down the ecru, but not stop as much light.
Most definitely you can use fabric paint or paint mixed with a fabric medium to help it adhere.
Yes, just make sure you apply even coats, because as the light shines through the shade it will illuminate any imperfections, runs, blotches or uneven spots.

I really like the idea of a fabric sleeve pulled over the bare frame. Much simpler and neater. Plus the light will be brighter coming through. Kudos to kcama.
