I have used several different grids starting at 80 and the last was 220 - should I use a finer one before I start staining? This is a dining room table I will be staining and sealing.

It is Ok but I always sand lightly with fine grid in between layers and use a tack cloth to remove the dust.

Have you achieved the smooth clean surface you seek? Wipe away the dust
with a damp cloth. Let dry and get staining!

oWhen I did my dining table I actually used a wet sand paper in 300 grit to get it as smooth as possible before putting a clear sealer that just brought out the original wood tone.

I'd work up to a 600 grit...or 000 steel wool for finish sanding

Thank you all, guess I have more sanding to do.
