Vinegar Stains Don't Work!

I've made some beautiful vinegar wood stains by soaking yellow skins, red onion skins, etc, in jars of vinegar, but they've had absolutely no effect. I've used new wood, old wood, sanded wood, pine, spruce and oak. Nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Hmm I looked up onion skin vinegar stains and didn't find anything except for an age spot cure. Here's what I found with just vinegar stains.

Did you use steel wool? I've never tried the stains per se (intentionally). A few weeks ago, I removed the vinyl skin from the bottom of my patio door because there was a gap, and I scrubbed the pine underneath to clean it, before replacing the vinyl. I used steel wool and vinegar. When I came back, it looked like I had stained it gray!

Soak a stainless steel pad in 1 1/4 cup vinegar for a beautiful grey stain. Will look clear but turn the wood grey. Remove stainless steel pad wait a couple of days and you will get a rich brown stain once the metals oxidize
