What type of paint can I use on a leather topped table?

I want to paint a green leather topped end table - just the top - to a black finish, leaving the mahagony wood finish on the rest of the table. I want a soft lustrous finish, not matte.
What can I use that will adhere and hold up to daily use?

Thank you. I've read similar, but I don't want to keep the green leather. It's the color I hate! And I don't want to refinish the entire table by removing the leather either. Was hoping I could just paint over it.

Leather has to "breathe" . You may not get a good result.

I did check you tube but they were removing or refinishing the leather tops. I thought I had seen a previous post in hometalk that discused this topic.

    Agree with LisaS.

Although it is a fad right now to try to paint leather, it is not a material intended for painting. Depending on how the top has been finished, the paint may very well not appply or adhere thoroughly, and you risk wrecking the whole table.

Can you put a black placemat in a fabric you like over the green instead?

I actually tried that first, since it seemed so simple, but the placemats are several inches too short! And I have NO desire to remove the leather and redo the entire table. Don't love it that much! Just wanted to get rid o the green. sigh
