Change colour of rug.

Hi everyone, I have a 100% acrylic rug in our loungeroom in shades of blue. I would like to change it to grey if possible. Any suggestions would be very welcome.icon
The dog will not be included in the colour change, lol.

You can chalk paint rugs and upholstery. There are you tube videos. The dog is perfect as is.

Thanks for the advice Antsherrie. Thinking about making my own chalk paint to try it. 😃

iDye and RIT both make a dye for synthetics, but they also say the best results are when you use hot hot hot water. Don't suppose you have a hot tub you could use? [silly face] Of course, you still won't get an even color. You could experiment with some yarn first.

I have heard of painting rugs, but then the pile gets stiff.

Hello Mary Rogers, It would be very difficult to turn you blue striped rug into a gray rug. You could take it outside and try painting it with fabric paint in order to keep it soft (we don't want the dog to rest on stiff carpeting), or you can use rit dye and sponge on the coloring out in the yard on a sunny day, and then squirt it off until it runs clear and hang to dry. In any event there is no guarantee that you wouldn't have a series of various levels of gray-ish stripes. It would probably just be more economical and aesthetically pleasing if you were to just purchase a gray rug to replace the blue on (and then you could experiment on the blue one if you wanted to and there would be no loss no foul if you did not like the results at all ... and if you did, well, then you could use it perhaps on your porch for your dog to lay on). I know this isn't the answer you are looking for, but it's an honest answer that makes sense ;)

Good Luck Mary, and thanks for asking HOMETALK for answers :)

Hi KattywhampusLOL, I don't mind if it's different shades of grey. In fact I would prefer it. Thanks for your advice. 😀

Thanks Vicky, the rug is quite large & heavy. It wouldn't even fit in my bath. I may have to try the cchalk paint idea. 😁
