How to decorate and find new furniture for my foyer/entrance?

My husband doesn't want it to be cluttered because the staircase is there, and there is a small space of wall next to coat closet doors. We like the coastal look, and would like to keep things light and bright with a modern touch.

What about a wall shelf with coastal picture or art above it and display items you love on the shelf? Floor is clear.
Maybe just pretty up the walls and don't use anything sitting on the floor. Try Beall's for coastal pictures etc to put on the wall.

Go completely different and make a fake window. Not one that lights up but one featuring a coastal picture and framed by curtains. If you need some storage below that consider a sofa table. They are MUCH narrower then standard table so you can't make them a dumping ground (as easily).
