My soil in the backyard seems to have drilling mud from the well mixed with soil. Nothing will grow on the surface, trees and deep rooted plants ok. What can I do to make my yard look moree attractive. I am 75 years old so digging up dirt not a real option. Help!

You might need to either dig up and dispose of the soil or amend it with compost and top soil before planting.

Use it to your advantage! If nothing will grow there, that is the perfect spot for a seating area! Do you have a helpful young person in your life? Ask them to help lay paving stones, gravel, or Decomposed granite on the area and set up chairs and a table. That would be a nice coffee/tea and reading spot!

  • Cover in a couple inches of stone or gravel. Use benderboard to make a design and use different types of rock.

Take or mail a soil sample to your department of agriculture. We did and had ours analyzed. We pretty much can't grow grass in certain areas, and we can prove it to our home owners assoc. IF the area can be amended with chemicals, or the right grass, the Dept of Agri. will let you know. Ours doesn't get enough sun along with poor soil.
