My mother had us use the leftover paint to cover the garage wall. Big, ugly cinderblock was painted almost lovingly by my sisters and brother, partly because we had to color within the mortar lines and partly because we got to do this balancing on a ladder.
I generally use any matte paint that is light as a prime coat when I need one. I use gloss and semigloss on color code tools and garden items or to protect them from rust.
