If you have a cat or have a friend with a cat ask for part of the used cat litter. Put cat litter on the corners of the room this works for mice- the rat may leave for fear of being prey. But what you really need is to find the hole it came from and block the entrance with cement or temporary solution use wire sponge/sos pads/stainless steel sponge.

    Rat snap traps work great.

  • Get a no kill trap and bait with dollar store peanut butter. Place in a corner, they prefer to run along walls.

Get a big cat. My German Shepard used to catch them outside.

I'd go with rat trap..peanut butter for bait. OR a box of d-con rat poison. Then seal off access to home. Not all cats will hunt or catch mice and rats. Depending on type of rat it can be almost as big as cat. A mouse will run but cornered rats will fight.

Hello Joan Buten and bless your heart! Rats like people. We always have a reasonably warm and dry place to live and plenty of food and water on hand. The thing is most folks don't like rats, and I don't blame them ... I like getting sick and the feral rats carry fleas and they BOTH carry diseases! (However at one time years ago I DID have about 19 pet rats, very smart, extremely affectionate and beautifully colored and patterned .. however THEY became infected from something some feral mice brought into my home and I had to put my little pets down .. very sad). But, back to YOUR dilemma; I have posted a link that tells you how to do it but you will have to stop being freaked out, because when you see one dead you are goigng to have to put the carcass in a double or triple plastic grocery bag, tie it up tight (making sure air is compressed out of the bag in order to slow decomposition and stenchiness), and dispose of it as far as you can from your home. Good Luck Joan, and thank you for asking HOMETALK how to catch a rat (sounds like a good mystery book title ... or is it already? LOL)

If you want to poison it, the best product I've used is called Tom Cat, and it comes in rectangular blocks. Make sure pets can't access it though. There are kill traps and live traps too, depending on your preference. All of the options should be available at your local hardware store.
