Sand and prime it. Paint will always stay.

If it has varnish it won’t stick. You need to sand it before painting.

I agree. Prep is the key. Clean them real good. Lightly sand to remove any gloss. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, BIN, or KILZ. Then paint. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane.

If they were painted with oil base or a higher gloss paint than you have chosen, you will also have to primer to use a lower gloss or water based paint.

If an oil based paint was used before, and you are trying to use latex now, it won't stay. Sand or strip, and then prime.

Agree with Kimberly Jarvis, my guess is that you're trying to use latex paint over old oil based paint or varnish. That will not work, as you found out.

You might google chalk paint to see what prep is needed.
